Day 1: Arrived in Glasgow

UPDATE {issue 6} Greetings from Scotland! - please CONTINUE sponsoring

We set off today to Glasgow. Everything is good. Clear and warm. Teddy is feeling great travelling in Xin's bag, with his curious eyes looking outside.

Glasgow is so different from Durham. It is a massive city with everything in XXXXL size... Extra dark bricks can be seen almost everywhere. A very industrilized impression, with modern buildings next to aged ones...very different. The one comman feature is that, both towns are hilly. But again, Glasgow is of XXXXL hills...crazily steep at some points.

We are staying at the Youth Hostel, with nice people. ...ooops time's almost up for my 50p internet voucher...

Don't forget that we are extending the collection till Monday 29th June, after our climb.

Please continue sponsoring us - we really can feel it when climbing Ben Nevis, yeah I can feel enpowerment at this specific moment - I know someone has wished us good luck:P

Time to get some rest...x

Set off TOMORROW and extension of collection

UPDATE {issue 5} Collection extends for 1 week - please CONTINUE sponsoring

We are setting off tomorrow to Glasgow. The climb will be on Wednesday 24th. The weather forecast shows sunny with cloud on Wed, temperature 11°C - 13°C (WeatherOnline).

Really excited!

Some friends told that they have sponsored, but we were not able to calculate the amount because it is Saturday/Sunday when money transfers delay. Also considering that the amount has not reached our metres:( we are extending the collection till Monday 29th June, after our climb.

Please continue sponsoring us - we can feel it when climbing Ben Nevis, especially in the second half...

Yea we need that power. Thanks for your support x

UPDATE {issue 2} £s are Coming In - great start!

This is the miserable exam week- -' and Xinxin caught a flu (proved not-swine!) since Monday till today!! The city of Durham have become less vivid than before due to pressures among all students!

Under a minimum publicity, we have collected £20 so far - a good start! We thank those who have supported and who are going to support us in the future! (The Raffle Prize is waiting for you;)

A couple of Ben Nevis photos...

The plan in full

The dates

Here's the itinerary (Time zone: GMT+00):
  • May 11: Blog published, collection starts - From now, start supporting us! How to support>>
  • Midnight, June 21: Collection ends - We publish the total amount collected by June 21, with a weekly update in May and June.
  • 09:07am June 23: Head to Fort Williams, stay at Glen Nevis - Stay at the bottom, and will be climbing from Glen Nevis to the 1344m summit.
  • 06:00am June 24: Start climbing 1344-metre Ben Nevis - It is said to take 8 hours, so I estimate it 8-10 hours altogether. We will take photos!
  • 07:50pm June 25: Return to Durham - And upload our photos:)

The amount

Our bottom goal is to raise £1344 - which is £1 per metre height we climb.

We do have bigger goals though. When it exceeds £1344, we add a new challenge for each £100 raised until it reaches £2344. At the moment, we proposed that each of us (Teddy included) carry 1 bottle of water to the summit, and give it to other visitors there, for every £100 raised. - Well it is getting harder! And we guess other visitors will be happy with our water...

If we get enough support and the amount exceeds £2344 - we are not able to carry 11 bottles of water anymore - we proposed that the two of us tie one of each other's foot together and walk 100 metres height, for every £100 raised above £2344.

If you have better ideas about such challenges, write to Teddy. I have a new challenge to tell you>>>

So, at least £1344 by June 21. Thanks for your support!!

About Project SriLanka and this blog

Hi! We are Xinxin and Di studying in Durham University, UK. We have been trying extra hard to raise money for Project Sri Lanka - this is where your support goes to.

a) The project
1.
Project Sri Lanka 'aim to assist with both the reconstruction and regeneration of tsunami devastated communities in Southern Sri Lanka and also with the long term sustainable development of both coastal and inland villages... It has students and young people at the heart of it. It is underpinned by academic research and teaching...'
(exacted from the website <http://www.dur.ac.uk/project.srilanka/>)

2.
We both joined the project to help others - this simple. We know that a disaster doesn't last long but it's influence does, especially that to people - sometimes lasts for his whole life. Aids to these tsunami devastated villages should continue even when the tragedy has fade out on media. Project Sri Lanka has been providing help to these villages since 2005, immediately after the tsunami till now, non-stop. We are carrying it on.

3.
The project is totally based on fundraising. So every little amount gives us hope and courage, and these little amount altogether make changes happen. Each year, children are brought laughter by their family-like Durham brothers and sisters; schools are expecting assistance from their Durham partners; communities work with young volunteers from Durham to build learning facilities; men and women got equipment (such as boats) to revitalize their business... All these are brought to them by our money and our regular visits.

4.
Money Durham students raise will be supporting:
- Travel expenses during our providing assistance in Sri Lanka communities. This year, our group is staying in the village from 9 July to 20 August;
- Contribution to the community. This year, our group is supporting Moreketiara.

b) This blog
5.
For the benefit of raising £3000 and lots of good-will for continuing this long-term humanitarian project, we are going to climb Britain's highest mountain Ben Nevis. We have the courage both to complete the route and bring changes to Sri Lanka villages - and the courage is putting on weight because of your support!

Climbing 1344m is going to be a challenge to both of us - foreign country, unfamiliar long route and 8-10 hours' mountainwalk. PLUS, we are going to pick up all rubbish we catch sight of on our way down.

6.
This blog is created to publicise our mountain-climbing, to make people know about the Project and that the tsunami victims still need our continuous help, and of course, to update the fundraising. Please donate>>tell your friends>>follow our blog. Thanks!
